The 1816 Revision List (The first Revision List to have Surnames)
-
The Passenger Arrival is sometimes a great source for the original names. The first immigrant's surname usually bears a close resemblance to the sound of the original Yiddish or Civil registration recording of a surname. Later arrivals from that same family (or extended family) may bear a more Americanized version. Often tickets were purchased in a newer version of a name. Given names were often Yiddish versions or a kinnui (family version of a name).
