Beyond Online Resources

There some a time when you have search all the pertinent records in the United States (or the country that your family immigrated to) and you want to find records in the country of origin. It is important to know the original surname, the names of the immigrants parents and the approximate dates the person lived in the country of origin before migrating.

When you have composed a succinct introduction, have a record of the passenger manifest and the information from the headstones or naturalization (of course, like information will do, these are just the obvious sources of this information) then you may want to hire a researcher or join a project to purchase records not yet online.

It is important to understand the country and places that you want to find new information. Often records or archives are closed to outsiders. Check in with other researchers using the JewishGen discussion groups and the SIG leaders. Know what records exist and who in the Belarus SIG knows most about your shtetl.
