Jalowka
Directions: The area in which the Jewish cemetery of Jalowka is not difficult to locate; however, in May 2007 no remains could be detected (Image 1). From Bialystok, travel east on highway 65 for 15 km, until county road 686 cuts in at right (south). Travel on 686 about 45 km to Jalowka near the Belarus border. The cemetery is located just north of town, literally in the pine forest area where the road forks (Image 2); at right, the road leads to the city of Kondratki, at left, the road leads to the Kondratki power plant. The area is marked by what appear to be fighting positions (‘dugouts’) (Image 3).
Conditions: Six visits by Tomasz Wisniewski from 1989-2004 preserved images of 6-7 matzevoth, a monumental tree base and the remains of a small mausoleum. (See images on Bagnowka gallery.) In May 2007, none of these artifacts could be located.
