BIALYSTOK

PHOTO ALBUM OF A RENOWNED CITY

AND ITS JEWS THE WORLD OVER

Compiled and Edited by

DAVID SOHN

The Bialystok Photo Album of a Renowned City and its Jews the World Over is a book of 1200 interesting photos with Yiddish and (sometimes) English text compiled by David Sohn. This book was published by the Bialystoker Album Committee in New York City. The Bialystoker Album Committee was associated with the Bialystoker Center.

This book contains a Yiddish language "Index of Persons" on pages 377-386. BIALYGen has transliterated this index, which is presented alphabetically in linked webpages that can be navigated using the ALPHABET navigation bar below or can be accessed as an Excel File.

Please search this names list for spelling variations. The original data was written in Yiddish and were transliterated using YIVO standards for transliteration.

In the Forward to this book, David Sohn says that for years he had wanted to publish a picture album of his hometown: "a photo-collection of its personalities in every walk of life, as well as its plain folks who have made this city the great center it once was." His album proves the adage that a picture is worth more than a thousand words.

In this book are photos from 17th Century to the Holocaust including pictures of its streets, edifices, institutions and societies; portraits of individuals -- famous personalities and plain folk; our hometown in its various stages; and pictures of Bialystoker Landsmanshaften around the world.

This book is now out of print, but copies show up for sale at used book dealers and on auction websites. A list of some of the libraries that have this book can be found here.

A big thank you to BIALYGen volunteer Kathryn Wallach for painstakingly transliterating the Yiddish to English allowing many of us this opportunity to identify photos of our Bialystoker ancestors.
