At a point in time, Bat'ovo had about 100 Jewish families, mostly simple working people, but also some Torah scholars.

Some of the Torah scholars were:
  • Moshe MOSKOVITZ, Shochet (ritual slaughterer)
  • Yehosua Heshel BICK HaKohen
  • Shlomo FRIEDMAN
  • Mordechai MARKOVITZ
  • Mordechai SHWARTZ
  • Yosef SHIMONOVITZ
  • and others ...
Rabbi Boruch WIESNER, rabbi and dayan (judge) of Batovo, always had a smile on his lips and would listen patiently to the villager's problems and advise them with his great wisdom.

Rabbi and Dayan of Batovo

Rabbi Boruch WIESNER, son of Yehuda WIESNER, served as the Rabbi of Batovo for many years. His family was actually not a rabbinical family at all; however as a young child, he would spend his time reading the holy books. When his brothers noticed this, they asked him, "what he's looking for?" He replied, "I want to learn Torah." The brothers were amused by his answer and would say laughingly, "Boruch'l only wants to become a Rabbi." His father however took him seriously and encouraged him to learn and when he matured, sent him to the famed Yeshiva (religious school) in the town of Khust (Huszt), led by the great Rabbi Moshe GRUNWALD, author of responsa Arugas Habosem.

In Khust (Huszt), he excelled as one of the best students and was very loved by his Rosh Yeshivah (head teacher), Rabbi GRUNWALD, who blessed him that he should indeed merit one day to become a Rabbi, which was indeed fulfilled. He married at a young age to Rifka, daughter of Mordechai Chaim KLEIN, and was his righteous partner for many years.

Shortly after their marriage, Rabbi Boruch WIESNER was chosen to serve as Rabbi in Batovo. He was beloved and respected by all and known as a very intelligent person. Together with his wife, he would teach the simple villagers all necessary halachic (interpretation of the laws of the Scriptures) laws.

Batovo, close to Koszony, is where the great Rabbi Hirsh ROTTENBERG served as Rabbi. Once a month, on Rosh chodesh (first day of a new month), Rabbi ROTTENBERG would travel from Koszony to Batovo to visit Rabbi Boruch WIESNER and speak with him for a few hours.

Rabbi Baruch WIESNER died on Yom Kipur 5699 (10 Tishrei 5699/5 October 1938) and was buried in Batovo. His wife Rivka was killed in Aushwitz on the 27 Iyar 5704 (20 May 1944). They had the following children:
  • Gitel WEISNER married Chaim Ahron KATZ from Brid, son of Avrohom Yaakov, and first had a shop in Munkács (Mukacheve), but when this shop unfortunately burnt down, they settled in Batovo. They were murdered with their children Moshe, Yosef Zvi and Yehuda. Only Sura survived, and after the war, settled in Jerusalem where she married Rabbi Yosef TAUSIG. She wrote her memoirs in a small book.
  • Zvi WEISNER married Leah. They were killed with their six children.
  • Moshe Yosef WEISNER married Ruchel. They were killed with their two children, Chaya Sura and Burech.
  • Yehoshua WEISNER married Yocheved. They too were killed with their three children.
  • Yehuda WEISNER married Esther. They were killed with their six children.
  • Esther married Rabbi Zev Sheftel EDELHOCH. He served as a dayan (judge) in the village of Iska, near Volove. Unfortunately, they never had children and they too were killed in the war.

~ Bat'ovo Cemetery ~

Jewish families that lived in Bat'ovo, and possibly other nearby villages, used the Bat'ovo cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones.

The Jewish cemetery is located in the town, along a street. It has a corrugated wall and gate and there is a caretaker who has the key to the door. The cemetery seemed maintained and periodically, the cemetery is visited by descendants.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries of the Zakarpats'ka oblast.
