Military Documents
The Sunday following the Ziskrout First Family Reunion in September
2004, cousin Anita Levy and I went slowly and methodically through a
box of old photographs that had been passed down from grandmother
Sara more than sixty years ago to aunt Di, her eldest daughter, and
then to Anita, aunt Di's daughter. Toward the bottom of the
box we found a packet of tattered papers, faded army green.
We quickly realized that we had found the military
papers and passport of Jacob Ziskrout, our maternal
grandfather. The packet contained Jacob's only proof of his
identity when he fled Russia in February 1904, shortly after the
start of the Russo-Japanese War. These documents, when
translated into English, turned family oral tradition into reality.
(An English language translation of these documents is shown below.)
The packet consists of three documents: a twenty-four page
Military Record completed in Lutsk, Ukraine on 16 August 1894; a
one page Service Record; and a one page Passport that gave Jacob
permission to travel to any city or town in the Russian Empire from
an unidentifiable date to December 4, 1902. This packet is the
only proof that we have that Jacob's legal residence was Monastyrishche,
Lipovetsky uyezd (district), Kiev gubernia (province).
Jacob was selected for military duty by lottery on November 4, 1890 and
began his active duty on January 1, 1891, shortly after turning
twenty-one years old. According to his Military Record, Jacob
transferred to reserve status, effective December 17, 1894.
However, his one page Service Record has him transferred to reserve
status as of October 17, 1894.
After completing his active military duty, the Military Record
provides a trail of Jacob and Sara's travels to Odessa on several
occasions, where Jacob was sometimes successful and sometimes
unsuccessful, in his efforts to find work to support his
family.
