The Jews of Krakow and its Surrounding Towns

Chrzanow and Trzebinia

Chrzanow and Trzebinia are located about 20 miles due west of Krakow. The two towns are so close together (they actually lie on opposite sides of the main road) that from a genealogical perspective, they can be considered as a single entity. Click here to see a map of these towns. Although overgrown and largely destroyed, the cemeteries of these two towns still exist and the general layout is known.

Chrzanow

The Chrzanow cemetery* lies on an irregular area of land and is divided into 4 sections. Over 1,000 names on most of the existing tombstones have been transcribed and can be viewed here. Many of the transcriptions do not include surnames, but if anyone can infer a specific surname from other data (eg., first names, parent's name, date of death) please contact Lili Haber. Click to read articles titled The Jewish City of the Dead, and The Jewish Cemetery at Chrzanow.

Trzebinia

The Trzebinia cemetery* is a small rectangular area with graves laid down in parallel rows. About 240 names from existing tombstones have been transcribed and can be viewed here. Many of the transcriptions do not include surnames, but if anyone can infer a specific surname from other data (eg., first names, parent's name, date of death) please contact Lili Haber.

(* The cemetery maps, cemetery data, and articles are from the book “THE JEWISH CEMETERIES OF CHRZANOW AND TRZEBINIA” published by Mr. Benjamin Yaari. The data from the headstones in both cemeteries were collected by Mr. Benjamin Yaari, Mrs. Ada Holzman, Mr. Eli Raba and Mr. Israel Wald.)
