Faivel Heilig and his oldest son, Louis, carried this sefer torah
from Uzventis on their journey to North America in 1899. Following Louis'
death in 1929, the torah passed to his youngest son who was then living in
the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The torah served a small Jewish congregation
in northern Vermont for many years. When that congregation could no longer
sustain intself, one of Faivel's great-grandsons brought the torah to his
congregation on Bainbridge Island, WA where it now resides in the ark
at Congregation Kol Shalom.
