Janów: Book of Autographs - 1913 to 1920

Includes young people from Janów, Strusów, Tarnopol and Trembowla

Florence Klevit writes:

At the age of 23, my mother, Pepi KORNBLAU RODMAN, left Yanov in July of 1920. She died in 1969, and I then found the autograph book among her possessions. She had never shown it to me, and I don't recall her ever speaking about any of her friends who wrote messages in the book.

Many of the autographs were written as early as 1913, and they seem to be farewell notes. I'm quite sure that my mother had no intention of leaving home at that time. I can't help but wonder whether the writers might have been preparing to leave and were saying goodbye or perhaps those autographs were written as my mother's schooling ended.

Because my mother saved the autograph book all of her life, I will always cherish it along with the memories of my mother.

Coordinator's notes:

The Autograph Book entries range from 1913 to 1920 and are signed by people from Janów, Strusów, Tarnopol and Trembowla. The last three autographs were written in the US: 2 in New York City in 1920 and 1922. The third in Atlantic City in 1927.
The autograph images appear in the same order as in the original Autograph Book.
The English translations are not part of the pages of autographs and were attached to the page by the translator.
The typed translations:
The name is sometimes spelled incorrectly. Whenever possible we have corrected the names after consulting the JRI-Poland Database and other sources.
The dates in the translations were sometimes written with the month before the day. This method was not used in Poland at the time and we have changed it to reflect the correct date.
Many of the female surnames end with a patronymic suffix meaning "daughter of":
For surnames ending in a consonant (except g) = -ówna
    For surname ending in a vowel or in -g = 'anka or szanka / ?anka

    Examples:

    KLUG [ Klu?anka ]
    SZERBA [ Szerbianka ]
The photo captions give the surname without the patronymic suffix in capital letters and, in brackets, the surname with the suffix.
