1922 - 1929

The Winds change directions

1926 - Across the ocean - Mielnitza
In 1994 Julius Reiter (1914-1996), survivor of WW II sent this picture to me. The family, as it was in 1926, celebrating life. The older couple sitting in the middle of the middle row is Fischel's brother Rachmiel Reiter (long white beard) and his wife Frima. Mielnitza, formerly Galicia, Austria was now Mielnitza, Poland which became a country again after WW I in 1919.

1927 - Chana retired after delivering babies for 10 years. She was about 75, living with Hyman and family. Bobbie, as she was called (Ukrainian for Bubbe) was "old world" to the family. I was told she conducted an orthodox Passover Seder-long, and boring to the children, of course, and out-of-step with the more Americanized adults.

1928
In 1928 Hyman and family moved to New York City, his daughter, Rosalie told me, looking for work or perhaps wanting to leave Toledo. This must have been a great loss for my mother.

Adolph owned two homes, and a woman's coat and suit factory whose workers produced the garments by the piecemeal. He and a partner were subcontractors for a New York firm. Philip tells me our father took him to the factory (might have been called The National Cloak Company) located in East Toledo, off Cherry Street, close to Waite High School. He recalls, left was the Tiedtke store and right the street of the factory, near a hospital. It was quite a walk for a small boy. Phil said the factory consisted of a large room, filled with many sewing machines and tailors. Adolph picked up a "handful" of money and they walked to a shoe store where Adolph bought Phil a pair of ankle high-shoes which he didn't want to wear. Phil was about 6 years old.

1929
Several significant events occurred during this year.

April 21st , Sidney turned 13 and was Bar Mitzvah'd, the only one in our family to have done so. It was probably because of Chana and the family could afford it.

"On October 4th, Alfred Sloan (manager of General Motors) observed that a sudden dip in car sales announced that the end of expansion was at hand."(7)

The Paramount movie theater opens.

October 24th -the stock market crashes!!

November 7, Adolph and Lena's fifth child, Frank, was born. The family was living at 2275 Jerome Street.
