Skidel

"Burials"

Leah Eshke, daughter of Reb Yehudah Tobolsky
Died 5679 (1919 C.E.)

This is the only surviving headstone from the once crowded Skidel Jewish Cemetery. All others were stolen and used to build roads and houses. Mr. Ilya Alexandrovich Borisov of Skidel located this one and restored it to the site of the former cemetery

Locals say someone from New York photographed every stone about 1935. Anyone know where those photographs might be?

Montefiore Cemetery, Queens, NY

Some of the names were in Yiddish and have been transliterated. The transliteration may not match current pronunciations. These are the names on the plaque. Burial information from headstones or cemetery records is still needed.
