A Family Survives:
The Stachels of Skala

This remarkable photograph probably was taken by a member of the Soviet army that liberated Skala in April, 1944. It shows the family of Leon (Leva) and Etta Stachel in front of their house in Skala. The Stachels were among only three or four families from the town in which the parents and all of the children survived the Holocaust.
Sitting on the left is Etta Stachel with her daughter Gizia.
The young man in the middle is Etta's son Munio and the boy on the right is Shmuel (Samuel).

After the war, the Stachels emigrated to Vienna, where Etta, Leon (1956), and Munio (2006) died.
