Skala Railroad Station

Return to "Skala Yesterday"

Skala's railway station (1916). The station was built at the turn of the century and later was expanded. The caption above the lower half of the photo may be translated: "Custom house in Russia." Prior to World War I, Skala was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the River Zbrucz formed the border with Russia. During this period, there was a Russian custom-house across the river from Skala, which was mentioned in a story written in Yiddish by Skala native Fradel Shtok.
