A monument to Bogdan Khmelnitskii

Bogdan Mikhailovich Khmelnitskii (1595-1657) was a Cossack hetman (chief) who led a 17th-century rebellion, the goal of which was to establish an independent Cossack state. Although Khmelnitskii is celebrated as a national hero by ethnic Ukrainians, his Cossacks perpetrated numerous pogroms, during which 100,000-250,000 Jews were massacred.
