GLÜCK, GRÜNFELD,
& WALD FAMILIES

by Jeff Goldner

Moses GLÜCK was my third great-grandfather. He was not born in Sečovce but moved his family there sometime around 1860. He married Katy (Gitel) WALD, the daughter of Berko WALD and Etel GRÜNFELD. Katy was born in Sečovce in 1837 and was likely Moses’ second wife. Moses died in Sečovce probably between 1864 and 1869.

My second great-grandmother was Esther GLÜCK, born in Marhaň around 1857. She married Salamon SINGER, and they had four children in Sečovce, three of whom emigrated with Esther in 1891. Salamon (Sam) had previously emigrated in 1887. Their children were:

Sali
first child
born: 2 December 1880
died: 3 August 1881
Morris
Jeff Goldner's great-grandfather
born: 6 May 1882
Rose Bertha
born: 26 November 1883
Emanuel
born: 5 December 1885
functional date of birth: 25 December 1885

After Moses died, Katy married Josef GRÜNFELD, likely his second marriage as well. They may have had a total of six more children. The only child that I know for sure was Fanny GRÜNFELD, born 12 May 1871, who emigrated to New York and married a much older man who died soon after. She lived with her half-sister Esther. Josef and Katy’s other children were Betty, born 1869 (I'm not sure if Katy was her mother); Zipre, born 1873; Hani, born 1876; Herman, born 1879; and Necha, who was born in 1880. All were born in Sečovce.

Berko WALD and Etel GRÜNFELD had at least three or four children besides Kathy. A son, Izrael, was born in 1833 in Val'kovce/ Nyíregyháza. He married Dori GUTTMAN, whose mother was Zali WALD.

Recently I was contacted by a previously unknown WALD family member who turned out to have a matching tree and also a DNA match. He is a descendant of Izrael WALD. I think all of that branch were from Nyíregyháza and Töketerebes, and eventually some of them escaped to Israel and adopted the surname YARRI — Hebrew for forest, the equivalent of WALD in German.
