Some documents indicate that my great-grandfather, Josef Friedman, was from Breszta and my great-grandmother, Mari Neumann, was from Kivarocz. Birth registrations of four of their children, which includes my grandmother Sadie, indicates that they were born in Parno, Hungary, which is now Parchovany, Slovakia. One of the children, David, who was born on August 15, 1886, had his birth certificate issued in Sečovci, now Sečovce, Slovakia. His birth city, however, is recorded as Parchovian, now Parchovany, Slovakia; other documents indicate that he was born in Parno, Hungary. David’s birth papers indicate that his father was from Parchovian and his mother from Kvakovic.
Unfortunately, I have not been successful in obtaining documents to verify where Josef or Mari were born or were married or what the names of their respective parents are. Researching for this information does become confusing when one is not familiar with the Hungarian language or its changing borders. Fortunately, however, I was able to obtain documents regarding their migration to the USA, their living in Scranton, Pennsylvania, census information, death certificates, and where they are buried.
