Druch/Dritch Family

The Druch/Dritch family originated in Yurovschina (Labun), Russia, now Ukraine, 22 km or 13.7 miles from Poninka.  We don’t know when or why the Druchs, Efroim (born in Yurovschina 1860 and died in Poninka c. 1922) and his wife Rochel Shereshevsky (born in Yurovschina c. 1860 and died in Poninka 1922) moved to Poninka.  However, all of their children were born there, so we will consider them to be a Poninka family. (And we don’t know why some family members used Dritch while others used Druch.)

Their children were

·         Samuel (Shmuel) b Poninka 1884, d Lynn, MA 1963

·         Isaac (Icek) b Poninka 1890

·         Hersch b Poninka 1892 d Haifa, Israel 1941

·         Sarah (Sura) b. 1894 Poninka d. Boston, MA 1955

·         Tillie (Tyla) b. 1897 Poninka d. Lynn, MA 1934

Shmuel Druch, who became Samuel Dritch, came to the U.S. in 1909.  According to the federal census and his naturalization papers, he was a 'shoe worker.'   He married Rose Bazman in 1914 in Lynn, Massachusetts and they had a son Harry.  He died in 1963.

Icek Druch
lived in Poninka and had 3 children that we know about - daughter Ljubov (Lubov) Dritch who was born in Poninka in 1907 and moved to Gothenberg, Sweden, where she died in 1980; Fania who married Grisha Unk; and Borish who married Xenia and had children Ilya and Valdek.

Hersch Druch
was married to Tonia Zorne and had a son Joseph.  Tonia was killed in the Holocaust in Dubno ( about 100 miles from Poninka) while Hersch died in Haifa, Israel.

Sura (Sarah Druch), arrived in New York on the President Grant, having departed from Hamburg, Germany on July 19, 1911 and stating that Poninka was her hometown.  She married Louis Faneuil (Fayn), son of Faiga and Dov Ber and grandson of Ester and Girsha Fayn), born in Volhynia, Russia in Boston in 1914. (Most of this information comes from Robert Faneuil, grandson of Louis and Sarah)
