Park Hills, Mo

The Jewish Community in and around Flat River and

St. Francois County, Missouri in the mid Twentieth Century

This website is devoted to the small but vibrant Jewish Community that flourished in the Lead Belt area in and around Flat River in the early twentieth century.  This small group of Jews supported the mining community and eventually was numerous enough to support its own synagogue. The community started moving away in the mid 1940s and by the 1960s was mostly gone but during the 40 years they were there, they were an active community.  Flat River and surrounding towns coalesced to become Park Hills, Mo in 1994

The first Jews arrived between 1910 and 1920. Early Settlers were Jacob Goodman, Aaron Goodman and I. W. Miller who opened businesses that supported the Lead Mining Community.

Over the next 30 years, over 25-30 Jewish families became part of the community in careers such as groceries, dry goods, clothing, loans, and many others. The synagogue, Temple Beth El, was built in 1926 and was the center of this community.
