Ruth Shapiro Igdal

Rivka remembering her schooldays

She attended the kindergarten which was under Jewish supervision. Then the Hebrew school (the Cheder) and finally the Lithuanian school. The kindergarten was for children aged 3 ½ till 5 (½). The Hebrew school was for children aged until 14 (8 grades). The children attended the Cheder from 8.30 a.m. till 3.30 p.m. They learned Hebrew, chumash (the "Five Books of Moses), science, history, maths and other basic studies. Rivka and all her siblings visited the Cheder.

Classroom in the Cheder

These picture are probably not from Pakruojis. Who knows from which Shtetl?

Teachers of the Cheder were:

  1. Shevadovitch (Chana’s teacher) who emigrated before the war to South-Arica.
  2. Wallerstein (unknown as to his end)
  3. Ritov, returned to Telz
  4. Sudovski, he married Tovka Eliason and they emigrated to Palestine, before the war.
  5. Kahn

After the Cheder Rivka attended the Lithuanian school for four years to learn properly the Lithuanian language. This class was 2 ( ½ ) hours daily. Nechama Rabinovitch and Zlatka Luria accompanied Rivka to the Lithuanian School.

There they learned how to deal with customers and business transactions

The children could take lessons in Russian taught by the Fuchs’ sisters.

Just a picture, for the record,  from a schoolclass in Pakruojis. Pupils just passed their exams. The young Jewish girl (sitting on the left, in a black dress on the first row) is Ida Trejyte, behind her the teacher A. Kripas

Finally Rivka found a job as a bookkeeper in the bank of Epstein in Pakruojis (Epstein was the husband of Sora Blumsohn Epstein of Linkuva). The name of the bank was Zydus Smulkaus Kredito Bankas. The Jews of Lithuania, generally spoke (besides Yiddish) Russian, Polish and German which they needed for their profession as a trader, a banker and other jobs.

Israel, unlike most western capitalist democracies is a combination of democracy and socialism. Though capitalism is encouraged there is a limit to its unbridled expansion within Israel. Ninety percent of the land of Israel is owned by Keren Kayemit, and is held by the Jewish State in trust for the whole of the Jewish people, ad infinitum.
