Chanka Shapiro

Chanka

Chanka was engaged to Dovid Latzman. Dovid Latzman was lost early in the war- the Nazis called for the intelligentsia. Dovid went and was never seen again. The story is told that all rounded up were murdered at the 4th Fort of Kovno.

Chanka (Ann) and Rivka survived together throughout the war – they were never separated - not in the ghetto, in Alexosotos (gifgangen lager), or in Stutthof Concentration Camp – they suffered and shared each moment together. Ruth and Ann continued this bond and were only separated by Ann’s death in 1998.

Chil Bercowicz was the son of Mordechia and Rosa Bercowicz of Dzialosyn, Poland. His mother died at his birth and his father remarried and moved the family to Czestochowo, Poland. He was trained by ORT in fashion design and planned to continue his studies before the war began.
Chana Shapiro married Chil Bercowicz and they stayed in Linz, Austria until 1947 when they immigrated with Chil’s sister Stefa to Norfolk, Virginia. They became Ann and Charles Burk and had one son. Charles was an amazing and kind hearted soul. He carried children on his back across the mountains to get them to Italy after the war.
He pulled people off the trains to Treblinka. At his death in 1969 he had over 100 employees at his manufacturing plant – ANJAY fashions. Their son Franklin Robert Burk passed away in 1997. Ann died in 1998.
