My grandfather’s
name is Meyer Zelmanovitz. He was born in Popel ( Popilys) around 1888 to
Mosche Zelmanovitz and Sarah ( Yeace) Zelmanovitz.
My
grandfather married Nechamie (Nellie) Zelbovitz,
while living in Lithuania. To this union were born two twin girls. One of
the girls passed away in Lithuania. The other infant girl,
Zipporah, died shortly after coming to the United
States. |

In this photo is my
grandfather Meyer Zelmanovitz. I believe that the woman beside him
was his second wife Sarah (Klein) Zelmanovitz. |

My grandfather Meyer
Zelmanovitz changed his name to Max Zebel while
living in the United States. This photo was taken around 1950. He is
standing at the site of his business, Zebel's Auto Salvage in Lebanon,
Missouri.

I’ve been
told, that my great grandfather was a farmer. I have also been told that my
grandfather had six siblings. One of his siblings was named
Jacob Zelmanovitz (who later went by Jacob Zalman
in the U.S.). Anna was the name of one of my
grandfather's sisters. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of any of the
other siblings.
When my grandfather left
Lithuania in 1908 to emigrate to the U.S.A., my great grandfather and great
grandmother were living in Vabalninkas, Lithuania. The family lived in
different communities around Pokroy (Pakruojis). |
