There was another member of the Atlas
family in Pakroy: Fishel Fuchs of Pakroy, aged 52, the son of
Yehuda Yosef and Zelda Esther Fuchs, of Pakroy, in 1894
married Guta Esther Atlas, aged 27, the daughter of
Israel
Atlas of Beisegola, the son of Benjamin (not to be confused with
Israel Atlas our grandfather who was the son of
David).
Fishel Fuchs was a widower, having been married many times. His
fifth wife, Guta Esther Atlas, was born in 1867 in Beisegola. She
died in 1901 in childbirth.
Their children included:
|
Golda was born in 1895. In 1929 in
Pakroy she married Shmuel Shur, the son of
Mordechai and Braine (nee
Ashkenazi) of Shavel. Shmuel was born in 1892, in Salokas.
Zelda was born in 1898. Her wedding
photograph always puzzled me as there seemed to be something incongruous
– on 8th Febuary 1938 she married Yosef Nehemia Stark, born in 1913,
fifteen years her junior, in Radvilishik. His mother was
Sarah Stark nee
Gelman (Helman). They had a bakery in Pakroy. We have some details of
Zelda: she was chairlady of the Pakroy branch of the Zionist Socialist
Party and active in Keren Kayemet. I think she also took part in the
activities of the Yiddish Theatrical Group. Frieda Igdal's mother told
me that after the Russians arrived in 1940 Zelda taught her Russian. |
We have some very nice studio
photographs of these two sisters Golda and Zelda. One has Zelda in a
full-length fur coat and a dedication to Mum, in Russian. They looked
like characters from a Russian novel. I assume that Golda, Zelda and
their husbands were murdered in Pakroy in 1941. Their brother
Israel
Gutman Fuchs (named after his grandfather Israel, and his mother Guta,
who died in childbirth) was born in 1901 but there are no other archival
records of him. |
