part 1 (introduction A)
Roch spent
almost twenty years working on the history of our family, visiting
Lithuania three times and working there in the Archives in Vilna and in
the Pakruojis (Pakroy) Municipality files. She wrote innumerable letters
to archivists and to historians, and to government officials
in Lithuania,
Belarus and Russia, and to family members and friends. She was still
working on writing up this history on July 18th 2012, just short months
before her untimely death, this
being the date on her fourth
draft of the Maisel and Atlas
section. She and I had
often discussed adding to her written material the many family
photographs in her collection. I have now done so in what follows. I
have also corrected a few factual errors [I have tried to put in square
brackets those of my additions that come within the text] and added, as
numbered appendices, what material I could find of the attachments that
she had intended to include. I have also added one such file that she
did not want to include and have given my reason for doing so, and I
added another file for which she had left no instruction. The legends to
the pictures and the footnotes are all my own additions as are some
photographs that Chana and I took in Pakroy and in Cape Town. Some
others are taken from the web. I drew up some simple Family Trees and,
in places, added relevant supportive material from the Jewish Genealogy
websites. (When Roch writes that she found material “on internet”, it is generally to the Jewish Genealogy records that she refers: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/). I am so sad that she and I did not manage to work on this together…. Wilfred Stein December 2012, January 2013
