Cemetery Restoration

Dear Friends of Nasielsk!

June 17

We have completed our work for this summer at the Nasielsk Jewish cemetery. It was another extraordinary experience.

This year, we had participants from the U.S., Canada, France, Australia, and Uruguay. We were joined by our partners from The Matzevah Foundation, including Steven Reece, Rachel McRae, and Przemek Panasuik; about a dozen students from Nasielsk's high school, led by Director Danuta Białorucka; our local friends Kasia and Jerzy from Nowy Dwor; among many numerous others.

Thanks to the initiative, generosity, and thoughtfulness of Hannah Yanover and the Yanover family of Los Angeles, we placed a temporary memorial at the site, which states simply: "In Loving Memory of the Jewish Community of Nasielsk, Poland. Dedicated June 2017."

While we did not entirely finish clearing the grounds, we accomplished an enormous amount of work.

We will be back next year to finish the job. We hope you will join us! Look for an announcement early next spring.

An unexpected highlight of our time in Nasielsk was a wonderful and entertaining visit with Elżbietz Fijalska at the "Pod Fiołkami" Elementary School, where the children sang and danced in our honor (with a memorable rendition of "Stand By Me" serving as the unofficial anthem of our whole visit). We are grateful to Tom Krason for helping to make this happen. Tom has been our ambassador to the local Nasielsk community and has assisted us in more ways than we can count.

Thank you to all who participated. Remember to share your photos and thoughts on our Facebook page, Return to Nasielsk

And thank you to all who supported us this year. Without your support, this work would not be possible. We again encourage everyone to donate to the project, so that the memory of Nasielsk's Jewish community can be preserved with a permanent memorial.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made to the Nasielsk Project at The Matzevah Foundation:

With your help, we hope to hold a rededication ceremony in 2019 (the 80th anniversary of the deportation of Nasielsk's Jewish community in 1939).
