RABINOWITZ Family

rabinowitz family.jpg (138860 bytes) The Rabinowitz family arrived in the U.S. from Motol on the Czar on December 23, 1913. The father, Elia Rabinowitz, was a scholarly man. On the passenger manifest he is listed as being an "awocat." His father, David, was a cousin of Rachel Leah Chemerinsky Weizmann. His wife, Frieda, was the daughter of Miriam and Samuel Ratnofsky of Motol and was 8 years his junior. Although Frieda was not the eldest daughter, she was the only one of her ten siblings who was married in Europe. The couple's four children were Mirla (Mildred), Chaja (Edna), Dowid (Daniel) and Slata (Stella). The Rabinowitz family moved to Springfield, Massachusetts to join Frieda's siblings and parents who had all emigrated between the years 1898 and 1907.

The BRIMBERG/BRINBERG Family

I don’t know what business my grandfather, Israel Brimberg was in, but it was a trade of some sort.  However, he was said to be a “Starosta” of Motol which means “Jewish elder.”  It is said he used to play chess with the Catholic bishop.  The story of the family’s emigration to the United States in 1906 is obscure, but it is variously reported that he was engaged in illicit transactions (evading taxes) and that he was helping Jewish boys to evade the draft at the time of the Russo-Japanese War. In either case, he was advised to leave the country or face trouble. He died in 1910.

Isadore Sokolov emigrated to the U.S. in 1906.  Elsie (nee Cohen) Sokolov and daughters Helen and Edith arrived in 1911.  The family settled in Schenectady, NY.  Relatives of Isadore Sokolov also settled in Chicago.  One was a rabbi there.  Some changed their name to Sokal and some spelled their name Sokolow.  Elsie’s brother Jacob Cohen and probable brothers David Cohen and Zelig Cohen also settled in Schenectady.
