LOCATION OF MISKOLC |
At various times in its history, this city has been known as Miskole, Miskolcz, and Bükkszentlászló. The accepted modern spelling of the city’s name is Miskolc, pronounced "Mish-kolts," with the accent on the first syllable.
Miskolc is located at latitude 48-06' and longitude 20-47'. It is 89.1 miles east-northeast of Budapest and is the capital of the administrative county of Borsod.
Miskolc was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until Hungary became independent after World War I, when Miskolc was the most populous city in the nation’s northeastern region. At times Miskolc has been Hungary’s second-largest city; but its population has decreased because of its depressed economy and, depending upon who is doing the counting, that honor sometimes goes to Debrecen and Miskolc slips to third place.
