Primary Records of Other Nations Created about those from Lyakhovichi

This is a page in our Documents section. Click the button labeled "Documents" in the left-hand column to reach all of the other resources of the Document area.

We have greatly expanded the coverage of primary records in in the nations to which Lechovichers emigrated, their "nations of landing." There is now a link box on the first page of this new series of pages. Please go to Nations of Landing Records - Description of US Federal Records to find the links to all of the pages.

United States Local Records
Records Created in the Jurisdictions of States and Municipalities
by Deborah G. Glassman, copyright 2009

This page is more of a concept than a completed presentation. It is a landing page for the documents that you can submit related to your Lechovicher relatives as they were documented in the US. Few of these records name Lyakhovichi in any context - the documents do not ask for a specific town of birth and it was rarely volunteered. But this page has a value that we have described elsewhere. It allows us to see what people who were born in Lyakhovichi put on their American records for the names of people who may have never left Lyakhovichi. The documents they filled in small towns and cities across the US, may describe relatives still resident in Lyakhovichi, as living or dead on a specific date. They may give other valuable clues for that particular family, and as part of a broad documentation of every former Jewish resident of Lyakhovichi, they bring value to all researchers of our town.

There are a variety of records available in the state and municipal jurisdictions. Please send us any that you have uncovered on your research of Lechovichers in your family. We begin on this page with marriage records, name change records, and birth records, each created under the authority of a municipality. We also include details from State Censuses, though we expect such an influx of marriage city-generated documents as to require an additional page for State records in the next update.

State Censuses

Kantorovich family of Lyakhovichi and Sioux City, Iowa in the 1920 State Census. It offers parents names, the information that the family is from Minsk (guberniya), and shows how one head of household named Kantorovich is related to another on the same block by giving them the same father.

Do you want to Volunteer? We need people to go through the records that we have and search for other records that will shed more light on Lechovichers. This table for instance is begun with the names of children in the New York City Death Records who are buried in Lechovicher plots. We need more extracted from our list and searched for in online indices and in the newspaper records so that we can then find them in the Birth Records. Please Help.
