Migration Tables Introduction
Updated November 2009
by Deborah Glassman, copyright 2008, 2009

Much of the Lyakhovichi website had been revamped for last year’s November 2008 update. The immigration lists were totally reconfigured but much more importantly they were instituted with a great deal of material not previously extracted from original records, by any party. We obviated the need for indices created for fifteen separate lists by combining those lists, eliminating duplicates as we found them, and by going to the original record to analyze the information contained therein. This remains a work in-progress, more names are identified in each update and the process of bringing all of these lists into a condition of “full examination” is painstaking and time-consuming and far from completed even for the names that we have long had available. The Migration Tables created last year gave us the opportunity to move from the Hamburg lists to the American port records, looking for those cited in Hamburg departure records as “from Lechowitz” a consistent German spelling, and trying to determine why a matching record might not be present on arrival in the US. We have discovered hundreds of new names in this fashion, some had been missed because their last residence was not indexed in a way that a search for a Lyakhovichi spelling variant would bring up; some were wrongly attributed with the town or national origin of the people adjacent to them on the manifest. Many were not previously reported on our pages because the American manifest did not note their Lyakhovichi residence. But some of those turned out to have Hamburg or Canadian records that specified Lyakhovichi which could then be tied to valuable clues to relatives and destinations in the American records.

My single most important contribution, is the identification of relatives who were not themselves immigrating in the record created. They were the nearest relative left in the old country, the relative at the destination point, the “care-of” address at the destination point, and the traveling companions who hailed from the same town or from towns recognizable as c. 10 miles away. Because of the way one find leads to another, we probably have twice as many still not investigated as those we have completed. Share your finds on your family and get us farther down the road!

Not all of the information is the same in every record source – we have included information from the Hamburg Emigration lists, the New York City Immigration lists created from 1892, and other port records from other US ports and border crossing. You can see some "artifacts" of the ways these records were created - coming from multiple lists, some of the material still needs to be moved into a proper column. Lists deriving from "Lyakhovichi-like" name searches and Baranovichi-searches may show the last residence of an unexamined record as "Lyakhovichi" the modern usage rather than whatever would have appeared on the manifest. Such entries will be replaced by the actual names of the towns as entered originally when the record is examined, but they sit there as reminders until that time. One of the lists combined with the others, was a list which of Third Parties named in the record and that list did not have arrival dates in it. The webmaster continues to work to make such information consistent for easier searching. I removed hundreds of entries for being from other places named Lechowitz, only to find myself encountering the same people in another port record and without the relevant information, I was looking up the same people several times each. So now, they all remain and I notate them as I find them. I have found that Boston Massachussets was a hotbed of Lechowitz Volin settlement as was the community of Council Bluffs Iowa, other towns no doubt took in the Lechowitzers from Poltawa, Vilna, and Mogilev. But until they all get sorted out, remember that some of the people in this list are not from Lyakhovichi in Minsk gubernia, the town that this site researches.

The flip side of that concentration on our particular town is that a different problem can arise. Until I began indexing the records for Baranovichi, looking for Lechovichers who had resided, previous to emigrating, in that town, I hadn’t realized how focused people’s searches were in the Ellis Island records. That focus is good when it keeps you from chasing down every Russian-Pale variant of a common name. That focus is bad when it prevents you from realizing that small towns and larger settlements in close proximity to your town of interest may hold many people who we can identify as Lechovichers.

What can you do to help with these Migration Tables?
First, send me entries for your Lechovichers that do not appear on our site. Maybe you were directed to them by a naturalization record, maybe you found them in the arduous slogging through record after record, in any case, sharing your finds makes us all more knowledgeable. As you move through these lists, you will find many records that have not yet been examined in depth, if you would like to tackle a few dozen in a weekend, I could continue to make annotations and corrections in a timely fashion and we would all get to the finish line faster!

This list has been updated in 2009 and 2010 and that update has several consequences. I have gone through each of the previously created Migration Table pages and searched for Third Parties named but not separately indexed here. All of the Migration Tables on all pages have been examined. The pages have been organized to find thelikely starting consonant of name variants - the first page now examines names starting with A and O, the second page B/P and others as designated on the list of tables above. All names in this list also appear in the Surname Index.
