Newborn and Missing in the
Revision Lists of 1834 and 1850
by Deborah Glassman, copyright 2008 (both the article and the table)

The final column "Reported Approximate Birthdate" appears nowhere in the records. It is reconstructed based on the age that was reported to the Russian government in the current census (You have to check each entry to see if derived from 1834 or 1850). It allows this table to serve three purposes simultaneously. A full accounting of those designated by the terms Newborn and Missing in the Revision Lists; second a framework for reconstructing those who were legally counted among the residents of Lyakhovichi at the time of their birth; third a listing of those who were legally resident but not accounted among Lyakhovichi residents at the time of the previous "census." Please Note that Age is reported either for someone who is a child/ young adult in this census and was a "newborn" in or since the previous, or is an adult who was missing in the previous census. Children in the reporting census may have had their ages made younger to keep them out of the draft longer. Adults may have made themselves appear older to move beyond a draft age. And generally, the farther from a primary record date you get, the less accurate the information becomes, so a person who was missing in the previous census may provide a less accurate account of age than someone reporting for a child born more recently.

Please Note this table contains data from both 1834 and 1850. You must check to see from which Revision List the Information was Derived!

It is the understanding of the webmaster that “Newborn” referred to any person born since the last revision list, or too young to be reported in the previous revision list, where the person would otherwise have been reported among Lyakhovichi enumerees. This would exclude those born in other jurisdictions with no legal residence in Lyakhovichi at the time of that birth and it would exlude those born in Lyakhovichi with legal residence elsewhere.

We need to study the "Missing" in more depth. The "Missing" in 1850 were primarily young men who would have been draft age in the time between 1834 and 1850 if reported in 1834. The "Missing" in 1834 seem to be primarily those who had draft age children when the Nikolai conscription laws went into effect in 1828. We need more data before conclusions can be drawn.

Revision Lists of 1834 and 1850

Extraction of Important New Data from
The Lyakhovichi Revision Lists
by Deborah G. Glassman, copyright 2008

Anyone looking at the records gathered by the Lyakhovichi Special Interest Group of the 1834 and 1850 Revision Lists (and the Supplements to 1850 through 1852) which is shared through its members generosity, is quickly aware of the genealogical value of these records. They give whole families, they list relationships among the members, they give an age for everyone enumerated in the current Revision List and account for all males in the last previous tally by the Imperial Russian government. More, they offer the information that families need to document the life-events of their families - they report deaths - specifically the deaths of males who were counted in the previous census and died before this one.

But genealogy is a somewhat isolated pursuit. We try to engage our family members, and we network with others newly identified as part of our family, but each line is often most interested in the materials directly related to their branch, and information that might be valuable to our research is often lost if it is not clearly tagged to a family member we already know. When we find information related to a particular event - a death, a birth, a marriage, we are joyous but have no context in which to examine it, we don't know what other deaths were reported, or what other births may have been missed. In the Revision Lists, we may miss the enormous value of the data if we can't compare one-on-one other families in similar circumstances. The huge numbers of people reported in a census make it difficult to slog through every entry looking for that random bit of information that might be relevant to our particular families and the large quantities of varying information for each family make it difficult to quantify individual findings.

The Revision Lists are a good place to change your focus. Move from being exclusively a genealogist to a community historian and the possibilities of this unique set of records expands. Now we can examine whole groups, now we can see what factors are duplicated over many families, now we can better understand and identify what is happening in our own.

There are many different pieces of information that can be extracted from the Revision Lists. I hope in the next update to include some new findings about those "penciled-in" remarks related to draft lists scattered throughout the Revision Lists and Supplements of 1850-1852.

These notes, abbreviated from our page Vital Records of Lyakhovichi, bear repeating first.

Deaths in the Revision Lists
The Revision Lists taken by the national government of Imperial Russia in Lyakhovichi in 1816, in the supplement of 1819, in 1834, in 1850 and its supplements 185-1852, all list deaths that occurred between the previous enumeration and the current. We can identify clear attempts to subvert the effort in 1816 when the Revision List reported a number of people as died between 1811 and 1816 who reappeared with a different surname in 1819. Others reported dead in 1816 reappear in 1834 as “missed” in the last census. See Dead/Missing 1816 with Correspondents in the 1819 Revision.

Go to Mortality Lists in the Revision Lists of 1816, 1834, and 1850 Revision Lists of Lyakhovichi This is a list of 350 Lyakhovichi Jewish males reported as present in one Census and dead in the next.

The page Vital Records of Lyakhovichi looks in more detail at the value of finding someone who is reported dead, either accurately or incorrectly. It looks at the total lack of information in these records for deaths of females, and of males not legally resident in Lyakhovichi. It offers some strategies for determining if a wife has died or been divorced between two Revision Lists. Other comparison info on women in the Revision Lists can ge found at Women in Revision Lists 1816-1819 and Women in Revision List 1834-1850 .

Births in the Revision Lists
There are two sources of information on age in any one Revision List. There is a column recording the age of the person in the current enumeration and another column recording the age of males in the previous census. For a male whose name was not reported in the previous Revision List because he was too young, or because he was born since that date, the notation “newborn” appears. So a list of such newborns using their reported ages in the current Revision List, would give you a last date by which that person would have been born. The ages were often emended downwards for males still living at home. Conversely, a male reported “missed” in the previous enumeration might have his age advanced to move him up out of the draft range in the subsequent enumeration.

See these two pages of birth info: Newborns and Missing in the Revision Lists Reported in 1834-1850 and Birth Years and Ages in 1816 Revision List

It is important to note that large numbers of Jewish male children were kept off the draft registers by the simple expedient of not reporting them in the Revision Lists, so this is not a complete register of males born in Lyakhovichi. The Revision Lists report only those infants whose fathers were registered as legally resident in Lyakhovichi and those who were eligible to be recorded, certain guild level merchants were not reported and it seems that largely their sons had the same excemption until some later date. The Missing Lists can't be used as a straight-forward supplement to the newborn list. In the 1850 Revision List, it is apparent that almost all of the men reported missed at the previous enumeration were draft age men at the height of their eligibility. Now they are registered with ages that make them seem too old to be selected for military service. So the ages are suspect and families with members who would still be in the vulnerable group, may be not recorded for two whole census periods.

We begin by posting the Tables on Newborns and Missing in the center column. We will add additional pages to this section as new comparisons are made. All of these materials are created by and are the responsibility of the webmaster, Deborah Glassman, and copyright to her.
