Death Certificates as Documentation for Lyakhovichi History
Lechovicher Death Certificates in Multiple Jurisdictions
by Deborah G. Glassman,
copyright 2007, 2008

This is a page in our Documents section. Click the button labeled "Documents" in the left-hand column to reach all of the other resources of the Document area. It is also a part of the Current Projects listed in the Welcome section, so you may also click that button to read about other current collaborative projects on which we are working.

If you skip the information at our page The Death Certificate Project you do your search a disservice. It will tell you more than how this project began and how much we owe to the amazing Tina Levine of New York City. It tells how we approach these records and what kind of resources they offer and how to proceed in your research armed with new data related to the parents, occupations, marital status, and length of time in the US, on each decedant. It also has a link page to every one of the Death Certificate pages on this site.

Here is a list as of 2010 of the Death Certificate Pages on our website:

  • Death Certificate Project
  • Death Certificate Database of Lechovichers who died NYC 1893-1943, w index
  • Indices of Extracted Parents, Spouses, and Informants from Lechovicher Death Certificates
  • Lechovicher Marriage Facts extracted from Death Certificates Abroad
  • Death Certificate Chronological Lists of those buried in Lechovicher plots NYC 1893-1948
  • Lechovicher Death Certificates in Multiple Jurisdictions

  • Deciphering Death Certificate Information

    Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio
Rabbi Benjamin Aduchowsky traveled to his married daughter in Cleveland Ohio in 1906, and died at her home in 1909. The death certificate states "Russia"as birthplace - you have to look to the immigration record to see a statement of "Lechowitz." His reported age to the government is now younger than when he immigrated, and the informant would like you to think that Benjamin's father who never emigrated, was called "Willie". But we now have enough information to look for a Wolf (Welvel) Aduchowsky of Lyakhovichi who was already married in the 1850s. And in fact Benjamin and his father can be found in the 1874 List of Males of Lyakhovichi

Houston, Harris County, Texas (with residence and burial in Mexico City)
Kiva Kantorovich was living in Mexico City but visiting in Houston Texas when he died in 1975. His parents Nathan Kantorovich and Rachel Gitlin were part of the large outflow of Lechovichers to the Caribbean, and to Central and South America in the 1920s and 1930s. As in the previous death certificate, the record does not state a particular town of birth but his temporary sojourns across the Mexican border to the US are documented with that information.

This page is for Lechovichers (those born in Lyakhovichi) and their immediate families who were buried in places other than the New York City area official Lechovicher society plots. If you have info on your family members who were buried in a Workman Circle's burial site not associated with a Lyakhovichi lodge or if you have details on their burial in a family plot anywhere in the area, or if your family like mine, never lived in New York City and are buried elsewhere, please share that info here.

General abbreviations and Usages in this table:
Italicized notes initialed DGG are input from the webmaster Deborah G. Glassman, not comments in the original
NC = Not collected. The goals of the database have changed a couple of times so the same information may not have been sought consistently, and on some of the material, the contributors were unable to supply the information on material collected over long periods of time.

Decedant - this is the name as reported in the Death Certificate
Age - as reported in the death certificate
Marital Status=MarStat: W = widow or widower; M = married; S = Single; na = not applicable (usually children). When the certificate elaborated "housewife" "married two years" or other that is moved to "miscellaneous"
Father - as given including with notes in original as to where the father was born
Mother - as given including with notes in original as to where the mother was born
Death Date - as given in death certificate
Residence=Res: When it doesn't indicate "Street" or "Avenue" or other road designation, the default is Street.
Informant= Inform: Mostly the informants were the doctor who is named on the certificate. When the informant is a family member I have stated that but moved the informant's name and relationship info to the Miscellany column.

Cemeteries: = Cem: If the name of the cemetery is easy to abbreviate and yet remain clear it will be so posted, if not a list of cemeteries will be included and annotated.

Funeral Director= FunDir: If the name of the fun. dir. is easy to abbreviate and yet remain clear it will be so posted, if not a list of cemeteries will be included and annotated.

Doctor: cited in death certificate and the address given in the record.
Miscellaneous - this information varies widely always including cause of death but sometimes including birthdates, lenth of US and NYC stay, occupations, info on parents, other

I am also posting some info on people who I know died in these communities but for whom I do not yet have a death certificate. If you have any for them, or know of others in that community, please help!

    Death Certs - Multiple Jurisdictions

    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Sarah (Slonimsky) Shane lived in Philadelphia when she died in 1912. Her husband had arrived in 1888 and her father and stepmother had been in the country from around the same year. We can now look for the records of Kalman and Bessie Slominsky who had to have been married by around 1870.

Death Certificate Information might be filled in differently for one family member than another
Four Years Earlier - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Kalman Slonimsky died at the end of 1907 just a few years before his daughter Sarah whose death certificate is shown above, and in the same place. His family knew his father's name and put it on his tombstone but the spaces for information related to parents is left blank on his form.
