Matsevot, Cemetery Inscriptions
for those "from" Lyakhovichi
Table and Database creation by Deborah Glassman, copyright 2008.

This is a page in our Documents section. Click the button labeled "Documents" in the left-hand column to reach all of the other resources of the Document area. It is also a part of the Current Projects listed in the Welcome section, so you may also click that button to read about other current collaborative projects on which we are working.

Please go to Cemetery Stones, page 1- The Matsevot of former Lechovichers . The article describes some of our new discoveries that let us determine key facts about the deceased even when their stone is damaged, eroded, or missing. Please check this article to learn what the symbols and shapes of the monuments may tell you as well as details we can learn from the Hebrew names on the markers. The page you are on, is one created by the collaborative efforts of those researching their Lyakhovichi families. Most of the individuals who are described on this page, are not buried in a plot with known Lechovicher connections - they were buried in the landsmanschaften of their spouses; in burial plots associated with Minsker, Slutsker, or "Russian" Jews; or as in the local Jewish cemetery of small communities around the world.

The graves on this page come to us with an important piece of data - that this is a site built by the efforts of an active community. Every grave photo is the gift of a caring person who shared their time and knowledge with all of us. Thank you!

The graves below are arranged alphabetically under a given community and will eventually appear in indices on our pages. See also the Index to Hebrew Names on Lechovicher Cemetery Stones.

VINOGRAD

VINOGRAD, Chashke

Bayside Cemetery, Ozone Park, Queens, NY

d NYC 11/18/1890

Age 4yrs, 8 mos, 7 days. Resided 3 Forsyth St, 2Nd Floor, NYC. Born Russia. Father Simmel, Mother Basie. Death certificate #36003. Cause of Death meningitis. Funeral Director Joe Mistofsky.

This is the first known death of a Lechovicher, her parents Zimel and Bessie Winnegrod, were founding members of the Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz. But she died before the cemetery plot in Washington Cemetery was acquired. The record is in JewishGen's Online Burial Registry. It is not clear how much of this info derives from which kind of record, appears to be largely from death certificate as the cemetery is indicated with a question mark.
