Documents of Lyakhovichi History:
The 1819 Revision List

This is a page in our Documents section. Click the Documents button in the left-hand column to see additional resources

NEW! COMPLETELY REORGANIZED IN CONTENT; NEW SIGNATURE PAGES INCLUDED!!
The 1819 Revision List is in the process of being reexamined in its entirety. The main listing has been reorganized to better reflect the ordered appearance in the Russian ledgers and to clearly indicate who is who in each household. The signature pages' unique look at the leadership of the Jewish community has been included in both facsimile and analysis. In Fall 2007 we created a new table examining those reported dead/missing/ runaway in the 1816 Revision List who may reappear in 1819 under the same and different surnames. While previously appearing on the page with the 1819 Enumeration, it has been moved in the November 2009 update to it's own page Dead and Missing of 1816 Revision with Correspondents in 1819.

This page, which looks at the 1819 Revision List, gives an intimate look at the 200+ families who were added in this supplement to the list created just three years previously, in the 1816 Revision List. Share your ideas on what else would naturally complement these pages and in what other directions we should explore.

The 1819 Revision List
contributed by the Lyakhovichi Research Group
Introduction by Deborah G. Glassman

The material referred to on these pages can be studied in the microfilm copies preserved in the Family History Library system. It's call number is FHL 2010470 . As you get copies of individual pages we invite you to share your findings referenced by specific images, with our research community!

Many of the new findings that we have made about the signatory page of this document appear in the left hand column of this page, but there are still new explorations of the main body of this document, to be made.

You will see on the page for the 1816 Revision List, that we have done an analysis of individuals on that document to determine if they had also been on the 1784 Grand Duchy of Lithuania Census.Since the 1819 Revision is largely a supplement to the 1816, the correlations are valuable to this enumeration as well.

We have posted the information related to those reported as "Newborn or Missing" in the 1834 and 1850 Revision Lists at InfoTables1 - Newborn and Missing in the 1834 and 1850 Revision Lists. We have posted the mortality information from 1834 and 1850 Revision Lists at InfoTables2 - Mortality Lists in the 1834 and 1850 Revision Lists. Now we have moved the list of those reported Dead and Missing in the 1816 Revision List from the page you are on to InfoTables3 - Dead and Missing from the 1816 Revision List including those With Correspondents in 1819 That last list is uniquely valuable for the study of the 1819 Supplement we examine on this page. Unlike any other mortality record, that list of those who had been present in 1811 and were reported dead or absent in 1816, appears to have been in large part, fabricated to protect those that had moved away without permission during the Napoleonic wars.

At the end of 2007 we posted the information about that List of Dead and Missing as a "news alert". Late breaking report: November 2007. In the effort to create a patronymic index for the whole Lyakhovichi webpage, an interesting set of discoveries were made. The names of men described as "runaway" or "missing" in the 1816 Revision Lists [examination of men previously reported in 1811,] are not surprisingly often found in the 1819 Revision List of men "missed" in the earlier lists. But very unexpectedly, a huge percentage of those recorded as "dead," "died in 1813" or other such report that one would expect to be final, have a name and patronymic and age grouping that exactly corresponds to a single person in the 1819 Revision List. Each of the correspondents in the 1819 Revision List have not previously appeared in either 1811 or 1816 under the surname with which they are reported in 1819. In this period, between the first surname legislation in 1805 and the final mandate of surnames in 1840, surnames in Lyakhovichi seem to have been in flux . A side by side comparison of all the people who were reported as missing or dead between the 1811 Revision List and the 1816 tally, with those who appear in the 1819 Revision list, would be of value. Do we have a preliminary list of deaths or emigrants or do we have a series of people who shared a name and patronymic with others who were coincidentally reported missing in the same census and were accounted for in 1819? The list that we at that time posted on this page has now been moved to InfoTables3 - Dead and Missing from the 1816 Revision List.

We can now start to develop more detailied databases from the information reported in the 1819 Revision List. By 1819 we may be getting closer to a real evaluation of those reported with ages under thirty. Older people would have entered the registration system with both conscious attempts to deceive and inadvertant mistakes, that could misreport ages by decades. Younger adults, by 1819, would have been in their third reporting for a Revision list and in those whose families were long-time Lyakhovichi residents, we could gather these ages to reconstruct a "birth list" for Lyakhovichi.

We will start to post the actual pages of this Revision List on our website. Though your skills at reading Russian handwriting may be non-existent, it still puts the actual material in front of you, before it has been digested for a table. Reading an inspiring article, written by Dr. Neville Lamdan on the website of the Jewish Family History organization, made me realize that the way in which patronymics are organized on these tables may disguise important facts. He studied a particular listing for a subject of interest to him, and recognized that the person had a double-patronymic, giving the name of both father and grandfather for the same person. That fact armed him to identify the family on the 1784 Grand Duchy of Lithuania Census. But a less perceptive person might have been misled because the tables often remove the patronymic ending and replace it with "father's name" which might show that same double patronymic, simply as a double name. So getting the facts "straight from the horse's mouth" becomes very important.

There is more we can do, but your input can change what we learn. There are people who were alive in 1819 who eventually emigrated to Western Europe and the US. Help us identify them in records of other lands. Help us calculate who was left off these rolls and why.

The 1819 Revision List

The table below has had a column removed. There was a column headed "Comments" in which every one one of the people on the 1819 Revision List was noted as "missed." The fact that they were not enumerated in 1816 because they had been missed, is important, but since all of those listed were in the same condition, this table was amended. The table has been further changed in Winter 2008. There were very few notations of relationship to the head of household in this Revision, possibly because many of the households included in this Revision Supplement, were very small, often only a husband and wife. Women without patrynomics, reported on the facing page to the man, were presumed to be the wife of the man whose name was opposite. Notations about sisters and brothers are in the original. All of the other relationship notations in this listing are Not in the Original but are comments of either the webmaster or the translator. This is important, because misunderstandings of the original material can be cleared up by examination of the originals at the Family History Library. The table is organized by household number. Examination of the 1834 Revision List showed that families were examined in the same order in 1816 through 1834 and that some relationships and name changes could be determined from the order or recording. See our introduction page to the Imperial Russian Revision Lists. People indicated as "only person in household" or with only other minors present in 1819, are often included in other households in 1834, please see that material. Finally, we originally posted this Revision List with two side-by-side orderings, one by household and one alphabetical. The alphabetical listing has been reduced to just a name index to the main listing to reduce repetition. The main report is below and the Surname Index is in the left hand column.

Notes on the “Sign-off” Page of the 1819 Supplementary Revision

by Neville Lamdan, copyright 2007

The 1819 Revision List and its images are from the Family History Library film #2010469 which is the same as NHAB file 333/9/220, pp.1009 ob.- 1045

Lyakhovichi's Jewish leaders signing the Russian Census of 1819 in Polish and Hebrew

Signatures of Jewish Leaders on 1819 Revision List for Lyakhovichi

1.   On the last two facing pages of the 1819 Revision, it is indicated that 217 individuals or family groups were enumerated, made up of 244 males and 208 females, giving a total of 452 individuals.

2.   In 1816, only 76 family groups had been recorded, i.e. about ¼ of the number recorded in 1819. If, on that basis, one assumes that in 1816 about one ¼ of the 1819 figure were recorded, that yields ~113 people. The combined total for 1816 and 1819 is then is in the region of 565 individuals. On the face of it, that is still a marked "under-count" for the Jews living both in the town of Lyakhovichi proper and the satellite villages in the vicinity at the time (bearing in mind that in 1764-5, a total of 729 Jews were recorded and that in general Jewish populations were on the increase).

3.   A group of 7 Jews vouched for the validity of the 1819 revision. They all appear in the 1816 list. All, except for the first, Yankel Ashkenoz, signed both in Polish and Hebrew/Yiddish. Two added the title “Kahalni” after their names, indicating that they were leaders of the Jewish community.

4.   Their names, in Polish, were as follows:

i. Yankel Yochilovicz Ashkenoz;
ii. Binyomin Iserovich Gruzko, Kahal leader;
iii. Nahman Izraelowicz, Kahal leader;
iv. Hirsz Leybowicz Malowick;
v. Leyba Szaiowicz Hawza [=Gavza];
vi. Gdala Wolfowicz Jelina;
vii. Meyer Jankelowicz Malawick.

5. No official rabbi appears on the list, presumably because at the time the institution had not yet come into being (only instituted a few years later).

6. In the 2 bottom lines of the page (below the Jewish signatures), two Russian officials signed off on the revision as well - the 1st name is Muravnikov and the 2nd is illegible.

7. The 1816 listing was arranged as a straight running list, with family groups (husbands, wives and whatever) written one after the other, on a single sheet and separated off by a ruled line; whereas in 1819 facing sheets were used, with males to the left and females to the right. This latter arrangement became standard form in 1834 and 1850-51.

8. Scan attached is not to scale, having been microfilmed, Xeroxed and cropped!

The Men who Signed the 1819 Revision List

by Deborah G. Glassman, copyright 2007
This article was written before Dr. Lamdan shared his insights and experience working with this particular census. The webmaster's different emphasis, on the men who signed this document and their family connections in Lyakhovichi, should still provide value and so the article has been retained on this page.

New Information Posted 2007! We are posting the signature page of the 1819 Revision List here and will be adding sample pages from the rest of the Russian language material in the future. The page posted here, shows important information for Lyakhovichi researchers, not previously found. Every official document of the community was signed and witnessed by five to seven members of the Jewish community. On this particular document, the first was the only one who affixed a name at least partially written in Cyrillic characters, he is also only one of two who did not use any Hebrew/Yiddish signature.

The rest of these attestors to the accuracy of the document signed in Polish and Hebrew, and the second and third witnesses are clearly labeled in their roles as "kahalny," member of the kahal of Lyakhovichi. Note that none of the signatories appears elsewhere in the 1819 list, because it was a list of those who had been "missed" in the previous recording, and these were men of substance unlikely to have been missed. Which is not to say that members of their families had not tried to stay off the rolls: Biniomin Yserowicz Gruszke who headed the non-Cyrillic signatories and Itsko son of Iser Grushka age 40 who appears in the table, were probably brothers; Leiba Szaiowitz Hawza was the uncle of Shaya son of Movsha Gauza age 16; and there were Yelins and Malawitskys on the list as well.

Signatories to the 1819 Revision List attesting to the 217 names
Yankel Yosel Yochilovicz ASHKENOZ, (signed in Russian). No title, the only Russian signature among the Jews.
Biniomin Yserowicz GRUSZKE, kahalny, (signed in Polish and Hebrew characters)
Nahman Israelowicz OGINSKI, kahalny, (signed in Polish only)
Hirsz Leybowiz MALOWICKI (signed in Polish and Hebrew characters)
Leyba Szaiowitz HAWZA [the name Gavza- note by webmaster](signed in Polish and Hebrew)
Gedala Wolfowiz JELINA (signed in Polish and Hebrew characters)
Meyer Jankelowiz MALAWICKI (signed in Polish and Hebrew characters)

Though it was said to be the custom for the leading rabbi to sign first or just after the head of the kahal, none of these men are designated "rabbi". Leyba Szaiowiz Hawza is noted in Hebrew as Yehuda Leib ben haRabbin Isaiah indicating that he is the son of Rabbi Shaya Gavza, who was rabbi in Lyakhovichi until his death in 1793. (See our article titled "Rabbonim, Rebbes, and Crown Rabbis of Lyakhovichi"). The first signature is one of the few with no Hebrew character signature which seems unlikely for a rabbi to omit. It is also the only signature written in Cyrillic characters, so perhaps Yankel Ashkenoz was an early official representative or advocate to the Russian authorities.

Each of the signers had appeared on the 1816 Census:
Yankel Yosel Yochilovicz ASHKENAZ appears in that report as Yankel son of Yosel Yekhel Ashkenaz, aged 54 with a wife reported as just 40 and a two year old son, (suggesting that this might have been a later-life second marriage). He was reported absent in 1811, back in 1816, a signatory in 1819, and finally, reported dead in the census of 1834. The person chosen to sign this list first has a proven presence in a quarter century of Russian documentation.
Biniomin Yserowicz GRUSZKE appears in that transliteration (rather than his Polish signature of 1818) as Beinomin-Itsko son of Iser, age 61, with a wife, son, and daughter-in-law
Nahman Israelowicz OGINSKI is recorded as 41 in 1811 and 46 in 1816 as enumerated with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson.
Hirsz Leybowiz MALOWICKI who, in his Hebrew signature signs himself Zvi Hirsh ben Yehuda Malovitch, was recorded in 1816 as Girsh Malovitsky age 38 with a wife and three young children;
Leiba son of Shaya Gavza is 56 in 1811 and 61 in 1816, with wife, three married sons, and those sons' spouses and children, with his daughter's children filling the household next on the list;
Meyer Jankelowiz MALAWICKI was recorded as aged 56, with his wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law.
Gedala Wolfowiz JELINA is there though I did not see him at first and reported him missing in an earlier edition of this page. He is using, as others in his families would through the years, the spelling of ELINA. Gdalya was among the youngest of this group, just 34 in 1811 and 39 in 1816, with a wife and child in both enumerations.

This document is the first provider of proven members of the kahal, the Jewish communal leadership of Lyakhovichi. Two of the signers were listed as "kahalny" making Benjamin Grushka and Nachman Aginski (to give them the name forms their twentieth century name bearers from Lyakhovichi would use) the earliest known leaders of the Jewish community in Lyakhovichi. They are likely to lose that distinction as we learn more about the earlier centuries of Jewish life here, but their identification remains important as does the possibility of determining the role of Russian-speaking Yankel Ashkenoz who signed this document in the first position.

The other fact that stands out for these seven men, is that families with these surnames continued to exist in Lyakhovichi through the nineteenth century. We find the names Grushka, Aginski, Gavza, Jelin, and Malowitsky, in the community right up until the Shoah. A Gedaliah son of Wolf Jelin emigrated from Lyakhovichi eighty years after a Gedaliah son of Wolf Jelin signed this document, a half dozen men named Shaia Gavza lived in the town as the twentieth century began. There had been two lines of the Malowitsky family in the town since the mid-eighteenth century, Meir ben Yankel Malowitsky was in the one that had been separate from that of the Lechovicher Rebbes since the mid 1700s, but the other Malowitsky listed has not been identified. Yankel Ashkenoz's son reported in 1816 seems to have died in his thirties and it is not clear that Yankel had other descendants carrying his name.

One more fact, has become newly apparent, as more records are opened. Each of the men who were signatories in 1819 had lived in Lyakhovichi for more than thirty years because each seems to have appeared on the Grand Duchy of Lithuania 1784 census, with the possible exception of a missing six year old. It may be a commonality of names but more likely the Beinomin son of Iser who is a 56 year old man in 1811, is the same person as the only Byniomin son of Iser on that earlier Census page. Yankel son of Yosel Yekhel Ashkenoz who was somewhere in age between the 54 reported for him in 1816 and the 67 which was said to have been his age in 1816 according to the 1834 Revision List, seems likely to be the same as the only Jankiel ben Josiel reported in the entire Lyakhovichi list of 1784. The Nachman son of Israel Oginski who is 41 in 1811, would have been only fourteen when we find one Nachman son of Israel living with his parents in 1784. Girsh son of Leib Malowitzky, at the easy-to-miss age of 6 or 7, has so far eluded me. Leiba son of the Rabbin Schaya Gavza is unmistakably present, with the wife and child in 1784, which his 56 years in 1811, would suggest. Gedalia son of Wolf Elina/Jelina is a young 34 in 1811, and so appropriately, the only Gedalia son of Wolf in 1784 resides with his parents. Meyer son of Jankel Malowitzky only has one possible match on the 1784 census and it lines up totally with other things we know about the Malowitsky family. So men who are established community leaders in the Russian period, were from families that were well established in the Polish-Lithuanian period. Remember that all of these men signed their names in Polish, first!
