"Lodz seethed in ferment as the city grew day by day, hour by hour. Strangers converged from all over: German engineers and master weavers; English chemists, designers, and patternmakers; Russian merchant princes in blue coats and wide trousers over short patent-leather boots; Jewish traveling salesmen and commission agents -- gay, lusty young men who descended upon Lodz to make money and to have fun."

Memories of Jewish Lodz

"The apartment house we lived in had a front building with two large doors leading to our yard, two apartment buildings on each side, and the toilet building was all the way in the back. By being enclosed on all four sides it created our yard (this was not to be taken lightly). Our yard was our football stadium, our skating ring, and our dreamland. There were over 119 families, all Jewish except the janitor. Living there, with each family having more than two children, this was our dreamland."
