The accused joined the Austrian Hitler Youth in September 1927 at the age of 14, and belonged until 1931. From September 1928 to November 1931 he was representative Gaufuehrer of the Hitler Youth of Lower Austria. Vol 1 p 101, vol 4 p 720, doc vol VII p 537, 539, 550, vol 17 p 2430, BA LG Linz p 10
On 9 November 1929 he became a member of the Austrian SA. On 1 November 1931 he became Troop Leader on the staff of the SA-Post Krems, an 15 September 1932 Adjutant of the SA- Motor Staff Lower Austria and on 1 December 1932, as SA-Sturmfuehrer Adjutant of the SA-junior group Lower Austria. On 31 June 1933 the accused became SA-Obersturmfuehrer of the SA-Post Krems. On 9 November 1933 he was promoted to SA-Sturmhauptfuehrer. Vol 4 p 710, 718, doc vol VII p 581
The political activity of the accused in Austria led to several processes against the accused, in which the accused was also incarcerated for a time. At the end of 1933 he found himself in a short imprisonment during the course of such a trial for a short time. Presumably in February and March 1934, he was in prison again for about 6 weeks for high treason, conspiracy and incitement (Explosives trial). After his release from jail, he became, as Standartenfuehrer and Staff
Chief of the Brigade Lower Austria, the Liaison Officer of the SA to the
Landeslseiter Oesterreich [the Austrian Commander of the SA]
Since June 1934, Windisch was employed primarily in the SA and the
NSDAP. Vol 4 p 701
“On account of a recent event” which was allegedly to be brought before the Standgericht, the accused fled to Germany in June 1934. Here he attended from 15 June to 3 October 1934 the Fuehrerschule of the Austrian Legion. Thereafter he was employed for a short time on the short time at the SA –Post in Woellershof. From June 1935 the accused was the business manager for the University of Koenigsbuerg chapter of the N.S.D. – the Student Union – and simultaneously the Press- and Propaganda Agent of the Gaustudentenbundfuehrung [the district student group headquarters]. In this timeframe, the accused was on leave from his duties with the SA. Vol 4 p 713/16, vol 17, p 2432
On 1 March 1936 the accused became Adjutant of the SA-Post 1 Koenigsberg/Prussia. From 1 November 1936 to 31 October 1938 he was Fuehrer in the SA in Tilsit, and from 30 Jan 1937 on, he was simultaneously SA-Sturmbannfuehrer. In addition he was also active as Kreisamtsleiter [district office manager] and Kreisredner [district speaker] of the NDSAP, with membership number 542 225, on account of his previous membership in the Austrian SA since 1 May 1931. An even more responsible position, for which the accused applied on 8 July 1937, to which he felt entitled on account of his “exposed position in the movement during the difficult years” was denied him. Doc vol VII p 576 ff, 579, 580
From October to December 1938 the accused was in Austria again, as Kreishauptamtsleiter of the Gauleitung Lower Austria [District Headquarters Manager] vol 4 p 711, 714
Thereafter Windisch visited, at his request, to 15 May 1939, the Ordensburg of the NSDAP in Kroessinsee. And then he enlisted in the army. Vol 4 p 701, 714
In the SA the accused last held the rank of Obersturmbannfuehrer. On 1 Jan 1944 he was taken over as Kreishauptamtsleiter of the Gauleitung Lower Austria as his primary occupation while he was still in the Wehrmacht. Vol 1 p 101, doc vol VII p 56, 567, 589a
From 1 October 1944 to January 1945, he was employed in the SS-Headquarters C 1 – Department for “weltanschauliche Schulung” – [a bit of Nazi doublespeak! Literally it means “world view education”. That is, brainwashing the public to the Nazi view] after which he was a member of the Waffen-SS from 15 April 1944 on. Doc vol VII, p 590, 598 Hans Buchheim, SS- u.Polizei im NS-Staat, p 219
In the performance reviews of the NSDAP from 7 August 1935 and 20 Jan 1939 [In Germany, one was generally given a letter of recommendation to take along when one changed jobs], he was described as “absolutely solid in his world view, smart and intellectually very spirited SA-leader”, whose “accomplishment it was, already in the years of battle in Lower Austria, to build up a numerically strong and well-prepared organization of Hitler Youth”. In another performance review, of 3 December 1938, he was described as a “fresh, steadfast national socialist” who knew how to “pack his groups and weld them together, and whose versatility and talent in cultural areas made him capable of leading larger groups”. Vol 4 p 730, doc vil VII p 566
The accused was an “old campaigner”, awarded the golden Hitler Youth
medal, the 15-year party member citation, the Nuernberg Shield 1929 and
