Researching Lask Microfilms, by Alex P. Korn
In researching the Lask microfilms, I have become very familiar with these records. The surnames I am searching are KORN, SZADKOW, JAKUBOWICZ, MILGROM and LIBERMAN. Some years in the Lask microfilms were not indexed,
so I have been scanning every document. I ignore the indexes because they can be
incorrect and may not list the surnames you are expecting; in the early 19th century surnames were still in the
"experimental" stage and patronymics and fixed family names were used
interchangeably. Much more information is contained within the actual record, maiden names of women giving
birth and witnesses that may be family members. It is tedious, repetitive work
that is necessary for anyone seriously interested in doing a complete genealogy
project. I have also been successful in obtaining tenants registers from Lask. Anyone needing advice on researching the Lask microfilms
may write me at apkorn@sympatico.ca.

There is currently no JRI-Poland
Shtetl CO-OP Initiative for Lask. To volunteer for this project, contact Hadassah
Lipsius. No indices to Lask Jewish vital records are currently in the JRI-Poland
Database.
The JRI-Poland
Polish State Archives (PSA) Project is an ongoing project to obtain
indices to late nineteenth-century Jewish vital records not microfilmed by the
LDS (for Lask, after the year 1869). A list of Jewish
surnames from 19th century Lask contained in this database is now online. For
further information about this project, contact Shirley
Rotbein Flaum.
