Several images of houses in Kazimierz can be seen in our Krakow Album. The house numbers are based on an 1800 map of Kazimierz shown below.
Most early vital records from Kraków (the indices for which can be found in the JRI-PL database) will contain some reference to the individual's house number. This is usually the address of the parents' house (for births and marriages), or possibly the individual's own house (in the case of adult deaths). The map below shows the actual location and house number for all houses in Krakow's Judenstad during the 1795 to 1805 period. It should be borne in mind that during this era up to twenty different families could live in the same house, and that these families were often members of an extended family. It also follows that residency in a specific house did not necessarily connote ownership of the house. (Click this link to see a listing of the houseowners during this period).
