The Jewish Historical Institute, Zydowski Instytut Historiczny (ZIH), in Warsaw, has a large holding of material that may be of interest to the genealogist researching his Kraków ancestors. One problem, though, was that the genealogist had to wade through the entire General Index in order to find the material (s)he was researching. Now, with the compilation of the list below, the genealogist can go directly to the documents (s)he is seeking without having to go through the entire General Index. This time–saving list is very important for those coming to Warsaw for a very short period. To expedite matters further, you are advised to follow the procedures below when visiting the ZIH (Telephone: 48+22+8279221 to 5):
Reading room working hours:
- Mon-Wed: 0900-1600
- Thu: 0900-1800
- Fri: 0900-1400
Procedure for ordering documents:
- Go to the Archives office on the top floor and register your name at the archive's diary.
- Prepare a note with the numbers of the "signatures" you request (it can be several at a time). It should be noted that you are looking for Kraków or Podgorze files.
- Return to the first floor (reading room). The files will be brought to you by the Archive personnel.
- It is possible to order copies of documents (don't leave this to the last minute!). Each copy costs two zloty (0.5 USD).
- Knowledge of Polish is VERY helpful. Some documents are also in Hebrew, Yiddish and German. The archive personnel do not speak fluent English but they really do their best to help.
