1771 Körmend Census
The following information has been taken from LDS
microfilm #1529696, 1771 census of Vas (Castriferrus) megye pages
197-198. An abridged form of this data is included in JewishGen's
All-Hungary Database/Other Census Records.
A note regarding currency (information summarized from
Wikipedia):
Between 1754 and 1892 the unit of currency for
the Austro-Hungarian empire was the gulden or forint (Hungary). A
gulden was defined as 1/2 of a Conventionsthaler, or 1/20 of a Cologne
Mark.
A Cologne Mark was a unit of weight introduced
in the late 15th century equal to 233.856 grams. It was used as a
standard for weighing metals and came to be used as the base for a
number of currency standards including the coinage sytems of the Holy
Roman Empire, including the Conventionsthaler which was defined as 1/10
of a Cogone Mark.
In Hungary, the gulden, or forint was divided
into 60 krajczár. Silver coins were issued in the amounts
of 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30 krajczár, and 1/2 an 1
Conventionsthaler. In 1794, minting these silver coins ceased.
I don't know how to convert the monetary
amounts listed here to modern dollars. If anyone can help me with
this, please contact the webmaster at <KPeter3434@aol.com>
The Tolerance Tax (information summarized from JewishGen Hungary SIG
Census Records 1770-1850):
The notorious Tolerance Tax was levied against
the Jewish communities throughout Hungary beginning in 1747, during the
reign of Empress Maria Theresa (1740-1780). The Jews were heavily
taxed for the privilege of remaining in the Empire, and were threatened
with expulsion if they did not pay. The formula for calculating
the taxes seems to have varied over time and location, it appears that
size of household, occupation, and income-producing assets were taken
into consideration.
A note regarding names:
It appears most of the names on this census
are given names and patronymics, where the first name listed is the
given name and the second name listed is the patronymic, i.e. "Martin
(son of) Jakab". Based on this, it is possible to surmise (though
not to prove) that there are several sets of siblings present in
Körmend in 1771: Lazarus and Abrahamus sons of Mandl; Abrahamus
and Jacobus sons of Han.; Hersl and Jakab sons of Geczl; Martin and
Samuel sons of Jakab; and Isack and Moises sons of Lebl. I do not
know if proximity in enumeration is an indicator of relatedness or
not. All names are listed in the order they were given in the
census.
The only two surnames that appear seem to be
SNAJDER and KHELNER.
