INTRODUCTION
The objective of this report is to provide possible archival sources of civil records of interest to Kolomea/Kolomyja/Kolomyya genealogy researchers. The report focuses on those archives located in or holding records for what was once the Austrian-Hungarian Region known as Galicia. Currently this region is comprised of Western Ukraine and South-Eastern Poland. This report is a work in process. When completed it is intended that for each archive identified the following information will be provided: ARCHIVE NAME, CLASS OF RECORDS, MAILING ADDRESS, EMAIL ADDRESS, URL, TELEPHONE NUMBER, FAX NUMBER, and GUIDELINES FOR ORDERING RECORDS.
In general it is advisable to contact the Polish or Ukrainian Archives in their local language. This will help to avoid misunderstandings and to reduce the time for processing requests. Tip: When possible hiring a local to contact and conduct searches at an archive can produce better results, faster, and often at less cost than trying to conduct business through post or email.
POLISH ARCHIVES
The archives in Poland are organized into three central archives, Central Archives of Histrical Records, Archive of New records, and Archive of Audiovisual Records, and 29 state (regional) archives. The state archives have some 53 branches. Reference 1 at the end of this report contains all the details about these archives. Details on some of those archives are presented below. Although our forebears were not necessarily much traveled, it is possible that residence in Kolomea may not prove to be the place of birth, marriage or death, business, schooling, or other life activities. If records are not found in Kolomea files, your search must be broadened to other locations within and without old Galicia.

GUIDELINES FOR ORDERING: Currently copies of records can be ordered through
Jewish Records Indexing-Poland (JRI-PL). The procedure is rather simple and the
cost is $11 a record. See instructions for ordering copies of
AGAD records.
In order to identify the records you want to order, you will need a Signature
number and AKT number. If the record you want has been indexed, these
numbers will appear in the index. The index can be accessed in one of three
ways; (1) online from the JRI-PL database,
(2) by donating at least $100 USD to the JRI-PL AGAD
Project/Kolomyya and getting a copy of the index in EXCEL format for your own use,
or (3) donating at least $5 USD per surname of interest which will be searched
by the Kolomea Research Group (KRG) Coordinator and a report will be
provided to the requestor. To use records access options 2 and 3 contact the
KRG Coordinator for assistance.
If the record has not been indexed by JRI-PL, you will have to contact the archives directly and arrange for a search
for your record and if found photocopying and mailing of the record.
For this procedure the cost could run from $30 or more per record for research and $10 a page for copying plus mailing costs.

UKRAINE
The archives listed below are believed to be of most interest to Kolomea researchers.
The Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is where Kolomea is currently located. Keep in mind that
Kolomea (now Kolomyya) did not become part of the Ukraine until after WWII,
so it is unclear just what records Ukrainian archives may hold that would be of
importance to Kolomea researchers.
