Welcome to the website celebrating the Jews of Johannesburg – from those who came when gold was discovered in 1886 (many of whom played a significant part in the transformation of South Africa from an agricultural into an industrial country) to the Jewish families who came to live and work in, and contributed so much to, the city that arose around the gold reef.

To help weave the fabric of the Community, it would be great to have your family included. I’m sure you have a particular impression or memory that you would like to share. Please send us a few pictures and a few paragraphs.

To connect, please answer as many of the questions on the Contact page as you feel comfortable with.
