In an email on 4/4/98 Jay wrote:
My great-grandfather, Meyer Silberblatt, came to the U.S. in the 1890's.
His
passport states he came from Russia. When he became a citizen
of the U.S. in
1896, his citizenship certificate identified him as coming from Russia.
He
used to tell stories about the Czar, and when he mentioned the Czar's
name he
would spit on the ground. He also came from Grodno Gubernia
(Indura). He
clearly considered himself to have come from Russia.
