Motvey and Nadejda
Trotsky pose for a studio portrait with their son Mark in Harbin circa 1930.
Motvey was sent to Harbin from
Samara, Russia, in 1910 as the Far East representative of a Russian sugar
company. He was accompanied by his wife Nadejda, who was a dentist before
marrying, and their 4-year-old daughter Emma. Their son Mark was born in
Harbin in 1915.
Emma emigrated to the
United States in 1924 to study at the University of California in Berkeley,
where she met and married Derrick (Dick) Lehmer. Both were noted
mathematicians. Mark changed his surname to Ross in the 1930s after he and
his parents moved to San Francisco. He founded Mark Ross & Co, an
import-export firm based in that city.
