This photo (scanned at 72 dots per inch) was provided by the U.S. National Archives, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001:  File No. GX2192, Exp. SD 157.  Date January 16, 1945.  It was originally a German reconnaissance photo.  Prints and negatives may be ordered from the Archives.

Photo is oriented with Northeast at top of screen.

Gargzdai had undergone a devastating accidental fire even before the War, in 1939. A fire was set by the Germans on the day of the German invasion, on June 22, 1941. By the time of this photograph, few buildings remained.
