MY MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS
SOPHIA ELIAS and DAVID
HANDELMAN on the occasion of their engagement. This picture was taken in
Craiova. The exact date is unknown, but it was in the 1890s. SOPHIA was born in
Craiova, Romania; and David was born in or around Kiev, Russia. They had 2
children born in Craiova, MOLLY and HARRY ("HANDY") prior to coming to
the United States in about 1904. They had five other children after coming to
America: MICKEY, JULIUS, RALPH, ESTHER, and my Mother PEARL.
