FIRST GENERATION BASEBALL FANS

Return to Kalarash Emigrees

First

A great way for the children of immigrants to show that they were "real Americans" was to be involved in baseball. In the middle of this photograph is Ethel Wiesenthal, daughter of Jacob Wiesenthal and Ida Waxman-Einbinder Wiesenthal, an immigrant from Kalarash. Ethel's friends, also first-generation Americans, are wearing the uniform of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Wiesenthals spoke Yiddish at home and so did their two New York-born children, who did not learn to speak English until they went to public school.
