Zionist Youth Groups

Betar, the Zionist youth movement, was founded in Latvia in 1923 and soon spread through eastern Europe. It was named after Joseph Trumpeldor, hero of the Zion mule corps, and by 1926 became the official youth organization of the World Union of Revisionist Zionists. They taught Hebrew
culture and self defense in eastern Europe and provided training for the people who moved to Palestine and formed the core groups of later settlements. Most European branches were lost in the Holocaust.

These photos belonged to Sala Holler, who took them with her when she went to Palestine, then eventually to Great Britain, and finally Australia. Her daughters, Rosalie and Ruth, graciously donated them for this web site.
