Ellis Island Database - Immigrants from Borszczów

From 1892 to 1924, 22 million immigrants and passengers came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies kept passenger lists called “Ship Manifests”. Below is list of people who entered the USA through Ellis Island and listed Cygany as their place of residence.

Place of last residence does not necessarily mean the place of birth. It is simply the last address the passenger gave. Sometimes a person moved to a larger city to prepare his immigration papers and gave that town as last address

Country: Galicia was part of the Austro - Hungarian Empire until the end of WW1. Any immigrant arriving before 1920 would give his country as Austria or even just Galicia. After 1920 it would be Poland.

Surnames / Given names: When the surname or given name did not “look right”☺. I looked at the scanned Manifest and searched the JRI-Poland database and other sources and added the corrected name in bold. Often, in the scanned Manifest, a surname was not clear but looking at the second page of the Manifest it showed the name of the family the immigrant joined or left behind.

If a given name or surname did not “look right” and looking at the Manifest and searching all sources did not help I added ?.

To make sure the surnames were listed alphabetically the entries were duplicated so that it would appear in the proper order for both spellings.

Often two surnames looked very similar. I checked JRI-Poland and other sources and if I found both spellings in the Borszczów area I listed both. Examples:

When you find an entry of interest, you can view the passenger record, the photo of the Ship and an actual scan of the Ship's Manifest. The ship manifest gives many details including the family member they joined and their address. It also lists nearest relative left behind in the country of origin. This is a great resource for family historians
