Administrative Districts, Oblasts, Gubernyas, etc.

As the nation boundaries of the Suchostaw region changed, the names of the towns changed and the larger districts in which these town were contained were also redefined. This complicates genealogical research. The following information is an effort to try to clarify these matters.

The following list of towns includes the modern Ukrainian name of each town. The Ukraine is divided into districts/provinces called oblasts as was the former Soviet Union. Almost all the towns in the Suchostaw region are contained in Ternopol oblast. This information was gleaned from a modern map of the Ukraine by Freytag & Berndt and by consulting Weiner, M. (1999). Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

Under the Austrian government, Galicia was divided into administrative districts. The name of each town is given according to an 1877 listing of the Austrian government, followed by the administrative district and subdistrict. Much of the record keeping in modern Poland and the Ukraine still reflects the organization into these administrative districts. The list is extracted from Wynne, S. F. (1998).
