Casino-Verein: A German-speaking club in Strážnice

At the Městské muzeum in Strážnice in 2008, there was a display on an association of German-speaking citizens. It featured a small poster with individual cameo photos of the members, and was accompanied by the following text:

Německy smýšlející obyvatelé města měli spolek Casino-Verein, založený v roce 1867. Sdružoval především hraběcí úředníky, zámožné mešťany a bohaté Židy. Spolkovou činnost zaměřil na pořádání tanečních zábav, koncertů a výletů. Členové spolku se scházeli v hotelu Königstein na náměsti a později v nově postaveném Casinu v Židovské ulici. S pronikáním češtiny do veřejného života ztrácel spolek na významu a na začátku první republiky zanikl.

The German oriented citizens had a club Casino-Verein founded in the year 1867. It comprised mostly the civil servants of the estate, rich citizens and rich Jews. The activities have been oriented towards dancing evenings, concerts and excursions. The members met at Hotel Königstein on the main square and later in the newly built Casino in Jewish street. With the entrance of Czech into public life, the club lost importance and disappeared at the beginning of first republic.

The collection of cameos photos included most of the prominent members of the Jewish community in the late 19th century. If you can help obtain a scan, write the Webmaster!
