Skala, Galicia, Jewish Innkeepers/Barkeepers' Complaint
Regarding the Rate of Tax on Alcohol Sale, 1812

Return to Skala Kehilalinks page

You can see who applied for what type of license, who complained about being wronged in a tax dispute, and who appealed governmental decisions, all of which can add a new twist to your research. The Austrian Ministries files cover the entire province of Galicia...and women were also in the booze business, not just men!  (Or...should we say, widows who inherited their husbands' inns and taverns.)  Perhaps your relative was Benjamin Spiegelmann who, from 1902-1909, operated the Bruderlicher and Braciszko Casino-Clubs in Kolomea or Selig Falk in Stanislawow who ran the "Hotel Centrale" in 1908.
